Barbara Aliprantis - Storyteller

That being said, as you navigate my website, you’ll learn that I was born in Greece, bred in Brooklyn, New York, and have lived most of my adult life in the most ethnically diverse locality on planet earth: the Borough of Queens.

I tell stories in Spoken English and/or Sign Language, depending on the needs of my audience and, when the spirit moves me, I throw in a word or two of Greek – my native tongue – for the fun of it. My repertoire includes:

· Personal stories about my Greek-American immigrant childhood;
· Anecdotes collected over twenty years of working with multiethnic, linguistically diverse populations – hearing and Deaf and
· Folktales from around the world and picture book stories taken off the page for presentation “center stage.”

I delight in creating programs that embrace diversity as a strength, by introducing the world of sign language communication to the hearing world through storytelling and welcome inquiries on how the spoken word, when combined with some sign language vocabulary, can accelerate the receptive and expressive skills of English Language Learners, as well as people with special needs.

I often punctuate a performance with visuals by setting the stage with original paintings, family photographs and artifacts. For staff development workshops, I share student-generated materials and handouts related to the topic at hand.

Each concert, workshop, residency, etc., is carefully planned to meet the specific needs of clients. However, because of my “spur of the moment performance/learning style,” I am able to tune into each audience and tailor presentations “on the spot.” (Click on TIPS FOR TELLING to see if you can identify your storytelling/learning style.)
